Let's debunk some misconceptions right now:

Magick is not evil.

It is not supernatural in the spooky movie sense.

It is more common than you think, especially since it is not exclusive to any one religion or belief system. In fact, you might practise some form of it, although it may be known by a word other than "magick". You might call it "prayer," "visualisation," etc.

Magick is the conscious manipulation of energy. That's it. End of story.

Its definition may sound simple enough, but it carries a wide range of applications. From wishing for something, or willing for conditions to transpire. Like the improved health of a loved one. And how about willing an edible material to take on the essence of divinity? Wouldn't that too fall into the definition of magick? If so, then what's the big deal over something most of us do all the time?

It really has to do with the impact - intended or otherwise - as well as the nature of its influence. A wish or desire is not necessarily considered directed thought, but it may still release some sort of influence into the cosmos. It usually depends on what the subconscious has in mind, and the amount of energy directed towards that end. Does it sufficiently contribute to cause and effect? If you're a believer in Astrology or related systems, then - to you - even the smallest input affects everything. Another reason is cultural. Certain faiths identify certain spiritual practises as "magick," while others do not.
