There Must Be A Fringe Festival in 2002

New York, New York, August 8, 2001 -- The Clyde Fitch Group, in association with
Fringe U, presents Great Theatre Debates III: There Must Be A Fringe Festival in 2002, the third in a series of debates examining the current state of American theatre.

The debate will take place on Monday, August 13 at 7pm at The Theatorium (198 Stanton Street, bet. Attorney & Ridge). The event is FREE and open to the public.
For information and reservations, the general public can call 212-399-7026.

Great Theatre Debates III: There Must Be A Fringe Festival in 2002 examines the Fringe Festival¹s accomplishments, failings, components, economics, aesthetics, administration, and effects upon Off-Off Broadway. These debates will cover whether the Fringe should exist in 2002, what it was in the past, is in the present, and why.

Randy Gener of theatre.com and Leonard Jacobs of Backstage will moderate the two debate teams. Debating for the Affirmative is Elena K. Holy, producing director of FringeNYC, Martin Denton of nytheatre.com, and Antonio Sacre, performance artist and among the few artists to appear in all five Fringe Festivals.

Debating for the Negative is Christopher Carter Sanderson, artistic director of Gorilla Repertory Theatre; writer, editor, and playwright John Devore; and downtown performance artist -- and leader of the rising vaudeville movement -- Trav S.D.

The mission of "Great Theatre Debates" is to elevate discourse about the American theatre -- to illuminate the art and artists, commerce and crises, and triumphs and trends driving the industry. By assembling distinguished and influential artists, producers and opinion-makers, "Great Theatre Debates" reflects upon the growing position of the theatre in American cultural life -- and the need to enhance that growth.
