When I first moved into my ethnically diverse neighbourhood, I checked out the botanicas to restock my supply of candles, oils, and herbs. There is a vast selection of novena candles from which to choose. Naturally - as is their faith - many consisted of the saints and Virgin Mary. However, many were for making someone love the user, or to manifest ill will between those one may dislike.

Despite some similarities in ritual practise between Pagans and the Novena Catholic, a line is drawn where conscious ethical practises are concerned. Sure, they may not know what "Karma" is nor claim any belief in it, but it exists for everyone. Those of this tradition are caught in a vicious circle of karmic offense/defense. There is no doubt as to why their protection icon San Miguel is so popular.

San
Miguel is usually associated with the colour red.

Is this right or wrong? Within their society, this is perfectly normal; the cycle defines their lifestyle. They answer to their perception of "God," and their view is to be respected.
